The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the lives of people at all levels, particularly in the area of health, where the lives of people in many families have been lost. During the crisis, however, we have witnessed and felt proud of many good Thai innovations. One of those innovations we want to introduce to you is the Knock-down Airborne Infection Isolation Room.
The Knock-down Airborne Infection Isolation Room was invented by Windchill Company Limited when Thailand’s COVID-19 outbreaks were severe, causing hospitals to have a shortage of intensive care units (ICUs) for patients with severe symptoms who made up 5% of all patients. So, construction had to be quick. This invention was designed and manufactured using a 3-dimensional system, modular design and pre-fabrication, which enabled fast production.
Isolation of airborne infections to prevent COVID-19 patients from spreading pathogens to other patients, including medical personnel, is achieved by using design criteria meeting ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 170, ISO 13485 medical instrument standards and ASHRAE-certified professional engineer standards. The key engineering principle is to keep room pressure negative and control airflow in patients’ rooms, use HEPA filters, refill new air in the right amounts and prevent the spread of air-borne pathogens from patients.
This Knock-down Airborne Infection Isolation Room was manufactured within only 1-3 months and is now installed in many hospitals such as Ramathibodi Hospital, Pranangklao Hospital, Thammasat University Hospital, Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute, the Golden Jubilee Medical Center, the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, Songklanagarind Hospital, etc.
This is a proud achievement which gives patients proper treatment, reduces the mortality rate and reduces COVID-19 infections among doctors and nurses. This innovation “changes lives for happy living”, so Thai people can be healthy and safe together.
