What is Innovation District??...

Many people may have heard of it, and many more may be puzzled of its existence. What exactly is it? Today, we will get to know what is Innovation District.

Innovation District is a new concept of planning and designing space and urban society by developing a city or district to attract a group of innovative business entrepreneurs to form a cluster. This is done by developing infrastructure, tools, and mechanisms that facilitate business operations and promote the quality of life of the people in the district. In each district, there will be areas connected to each other. There are agencies or companies that have research units or technology transfer centers to help develop new entrepreneurs and startups for the people in the area. Each developed innovation district is like a special economic zone with strengths in each aspect. Basically, it’s a way to spread advancement and prosperity to various areas throughout the country such as Suan Dok Innovation District (Chiang Mai), Khon Kaen Innovation District, Phuket Innovation District, U-Tapao Innovation District, Bangsaen Innovation District, Pattaya Innovation District and Sriracha Innovation District, according to the potential of each area.

For Bangkok, currently there are 7 such districts in development as follows;

Yothi Innovation District: It is the center for medical, public health and government agencies that provide many national public services, all clustered in the same area. Therefore, it has been developed as an innovation district for medical science.
Rattanakosin Innovation District: The area on the inner and outer Rattanakosin Island along the former moat (Khlong Lod) is a tourist attraction and has commercial and historical significance. Therefore, it has been developed into an innovative district for the continuation and creation of arts and culture, tourism and lifestyle.
Pathumwan Innovation District: The areas of Suan Luang, Siam Square, Rama 4th Road and Ratchaprasong are center for trade, business, and service--including education--at the heart of the city. Therefore, it has been developed as an innovation district for trade business.
Klongsan Innovation District: It is the central area on Thonburi side which is known as a community and an area for traditional economy. It is, therefore, being developed into an innovative district for the continuation and creation of arts and culture.

Kluaynamthai Innovation District: It is the center for manufacturing industry and transport of heavy industrial goods such as Heavy Industry, leather goods, and sewing. Therefore, it has been developed as an innovative district for commercial business.
Lat Krabang Innovation District: This is the main transportation strategic point of Thailand and for the Eastern Economic Corridor. It is the location of the international airport and logistics center for distribution of goods to all regions. Therefore, it has been developed as an innovation district for transportation and logistics.
Ari Innovation District: This area focuses on in-depth technology development according to ARI Tech plan which includes Artificial Intelligent (AI), Robotics, Immersive Technology and Data Connection and Transmission using internet system (IoTs). This area is considered another innovation district driven by the private sector who recognizes the importance of “innovation”. It’s a positive trend for the future of Thai innovation.

Innovation District Is an outstanding area with development potential to strengthen entrepreneurs and people in the area through innovation by bringing the identity of the existing area to combine with the new concepts to create a network of knowledge exchange on innovation. This leads to the most beneficial development of both the economy and social dimensions.
